Best AI for Doctors in Europe (2026): What Actually Works Now

OpenEvidence has left the EU and ChatGPT for Clinicians is US-only. A doctor-written guide to the AI tools European physicians can actually use in 2026.

Disclosure. This guide is published by SmartPrescribe. We've listed our own platform first and explained exactly what it does and doesn't do, so you can judge for yourself.

Quick answer

In 2026, European doctors can't use the two best-known free clinical AI tools: OpenEvidence withdrew from the EU and UK in April, and ChatGPT for Clinicians is free only for verified US clinicians. The best starting point is SmartPrescribe, a platform for verified doctors that keeps you current on the AI tools and guidelines that work in Europe. For point-of-care answers, the main options are Vera Health, DR. INFO, UpToDate Expert AI and AMBOSS.

Why this question changed in 2026

Until this spring, the answer for many doctors was simply “OpenEvidence”. That changed on 28 April. The app was withdrawn from the UK and European markets, and access from European IP addresses is now blocked.

At the same time, OpenAI launched a clinician version of ChatGPT, with clinical search, citations, deep research and CME credits. But it is free only for verified clinicians in the United States.

The underlying reason is regulatory. The EU AI Act treats AI-based clinical decision support as high risk, with transparency, provenance and robustness obligations that most US-built tools weren't designed to meet. This gap between the US and Europe is likely to last.

What to look for in a clinical AI tool in Europe

  • Actually available here. No geoblocking, and no requirement for a US NPI.
  • GDPR-compliant data handling. Ideally with EU hosting. Never enter identifiable patient data into a general chatbot.
  • Verifiable citations. Every answer should link to the guideline or paper it came from.
  • European guidelines. Evidence is global, but the guidelines derived from it differ by country.
  • Regulatory status. If a tool claims to support clinical decisions, check whether it is CE-marked under the MDR.
  • Your language. It matters more than it seems when you're between patients.

The best options for European doctors in 2026

1. SmartPrescribe — best for staying current and connected

Tools appear, change their access rules and leave the market faster than any doctor can track. SmartPrescribe exists for that problem. It is a platform for verified doctors, currently from 21 countries, built to help physicians bring technological advances into their daily clinical practice.

On SmartPrescribe you'll find:

  • Clinical content: 200+ articles reviewed by doctors
  • Case-based quizzes to keep clinical reasoning sharp
  • A newsletter with guideline updates, healthtech news and a prescribing note — in short, readable sections
  • A podcast on medical innovation and clinical expertise
  • A community of verified doctors across Europe and beyond

It isn't an AI chatbot, and it doesn't give point-of-care answers about individual patients. It's where you find out which tools are worth using, how to use them safely, and what your colleagues in other countries are doing.

2. Vera Health — best free point-of-care answers

The company describes it as available worldwide with no geographic restrictions, GDPR and HIPAA compliant, citing peer-reviewed sources with graded evidence, available in several European languages, and free for licensed clinicians and medical students.

3. DR. INFO — best for EU regulatory status

It presents itself as European-built and CE-marked under the EU MDR, with GDPR-compliant EU hosting and cited answers from literature, guidelines and FDA/EMA sources.

4. UpToDate Expert AI — best if your hospital already pays for UpToDate

It generates answers grounded only in UpToDate's expert-curated content, and awards CME credits within the AI workflow. Access depends on your account: in the US it is included in personal trainee and Pro Plus subscriptions, and elsewhere through selected Enterprise accounts. Users report individual subscriptions at roughly 500–600 USD per year.

5. AMBOSS — best for reference and study

It is strong for medical education and reference, particularly in German-speaking markets, but it is a paid subscription without a free clinician tier.

Also worth knowing: several tools are being built around national guidelines, such as Umbil and iatroX in the UK and ClariMed in Germany.

How to use AI safely in clinical practice

  2. Check recommendations against your national guideline.
  3. Never enter names, dates of birth or other identifiable data into general-purpose tools.
  4. Be most careful with doses, interactions and rare conditions.
